Steam has shattered its own concurrent user record, peaking at 40.2 million players online simultaneously over the weekend. The milestone was driven by a perfect storm of factors: the annual Steam Summer Sale, several major game launches, and growing adoption in Asian markets.
Counter-Strike 2 led the charge with 1.8 million concurrent players, followed by Dota 2 at 950,000 and PUBG at 710,000. Elden Ring: Nightreign's launch also contributed significantly, debuting at #4 with 620,000 concurrent players on PC alone.
Valve has not officially commented on the milestone, but SteamDB founder Pavel Djundik noted that the platform has grown by 10 million peak concurrent users in just 18 months — a rate of expansion that shows no signs of slowing.
The growth underscores PC gaming's robust health despite competition from console platforms and mobile gaming. Analysts attribute much of the expansion to Steam Deck sales, which have made PC gaming more accessible, and Valve's continued investment in regional pricing that makes games affordable in developing markets.
