Rockstar Just Made Netflix the First Place to See New GTA 6 Footage

Rockstar Games will premiere GTA 6: An Extended Look on Netflix on August 27. Here are the release times, YouTube schedule and what fans can expect.

Rockstar Just Made Netflix the First Place to See New GTA 6 Footage

Rockstar Games just handed Netflix something no streaming service has ever had: a head start on a Grand Theft Auto reveal.

On August 27, Netflix will premiere "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" a full six hours before it hits YouTube or the official GTA 6 site. If you've been refreshing Rockstar's channel for years waiting on gameplay, you now have a decision to make about whether a Netflix subscription is worth it for an early look.

When and where to watch

Netflix subscribers get first access at these times:

  • United States: 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT
  • United Kingdom: 8 p.m. BST
  • India: August 28, 12:30 a.m. IST

Everyone else can catch it free on Rockstar's YouTube channel and the GTA 6 website six hours later — 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT, 2 a.m. BST, or 6:30 a.m. IST depending on your time zone.

Rockstar has confirmed this isn't permanent exclusivity. It's a head start, not a paywall. But six hours is plenty of time for spoilers, screenshots, and breathless Twitter threads to flood timelines before the official upload goes live. Good luck avoiding that if you're waiting for the free version.

What's actually in the presentation is still a mystery

Rockstar is calling it an "Extended Look," which implies more than another moody trailer. But the studio hasn't confirmed a runtime or outlined what it covers, and the teaser released alongside the announcement gives away almost nothing — just a Vice City-style pink-and-purple screen with the premiere date.

That's classic Rockstar. Say as little as possible, let anticipation do the work.

Here's what fans are hoping for: actual gameplay footage. Previous trailers nailed the tone, the setting, and introduced Jason and Lucia, but Rockstar still hasn't shown how the game plays. Character switching, police AI, heists, vehicle customization, the sheer scale of the world — all of it remains unconfirmed territory.

There's also a decent chance Rockstar uses the slot to dig deeper into Leonida, its fictional take on Florida. Vice City is the marquee location, but the game's story is supposed to stretch well beyond city limits. Whether this presentation leans into the open world or stays focused on Jason and Lucia's story — which follows a heist gone wrong that drags them into a bigger criminal conspiracy — is anyone's guess right now.

Why Netflix, of all places

This is the part worth sitting with. GTA doesn't need a traditional gaming showcase to trend — a single trailer drop can dominate social media within minutes on its own. So why hand any of that spotlight to a streaming platform?

Because Netflix wants live-event energy that isn't tied to a movie or show, and a GTA 6 reveal delivers that instantly. The company is framing this as a first-of-its-kind partnership with Rockstar, and it's not hard to see the appeal on both sides: Netflix gets to plant a flag in gaming culture, and Rockstar gets a marketing moment bigger than a YouTube premiere.

It's an unusual pairing, but the trade-off is straightforward — Netflix gets bragging rights and a subscriber hook, Rockstar gets guaranteed noise. Whether it annoys fans who don't want to subscribe just to watch six hours early is a separate question, and honestly, it probably will.

The bigger picture: launch is close

GTA 6 is still on track for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Rockstar's official page. No PC release has been announced.

That puts this presentation less than three months from launch — arguably the last major window Rockstar has to explain what players will actually be doing in Leonida before the game ships. After years of leaks, rumors, and trailer forensics, August 27 might be the closest thing to a real answer fans get.

Netflix subscribers see it first. Everyone else waits six hours. Either way, expect the internet to be unmanageable that day.
