Wait, who is Chort?
Chort showed up with the Patch 7.5 dungeon and immediately became a fan favourite for reasons that have very little to do with combat mechanics. He's essentially a big, wobbly blob of a boss who charges at players by rolling into a ball, throws in a few belly-flops for good measure, and tops it off by trying to vomit on the party. Somehow, that combination of chaos turned him into an overnight celebrity — fan art, memes, gpose recreations of movie posters, the works. Even Final Fantasy 14's own official social account has joined in on the joke.
Yoshi-P's honest reaction
At a Fan Fest panel in Berlin, director and producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida was asked directly about Chort-mania in a room packed with fans eager to talk about the pudgy boss. His response was refreshingly candid rather than diplomatically vague. Speaking through a translator, Yoshida admitted he genuinely doesn't understand why the character blew up the way it did, even while acknowledging how much fans clearly love him and the flood of memes he's inspired.
That's not to say he's completely unmoved. Describing Chort's whole schtick — a hulking figure that suddenly curls up and rolls around — Yoshida seemed to talk himself part-way into getting it, even if he stopped short of full conversion.
He's not complaining, though
Puzzled or not, Yoshi-P wasn't dismissive about the phenomenon. He used the moment to encourage the community to keep doing exactly what it's doing — rallying around silly, unplanned things and turning them into shared jokes. For a dev team, watching players build their own mini-culture around something as unscripted as a boss's animation set is apparently one of the more satisfying parts of the job, memes and all.
Why this matters beyond the meme
It's a neat reminder of how unpredictable game fandoms can be. Square Enix didn't design Chort to be a mascot — he's a mechanically straightforward dungeon boss — but the community's sense of humour turned him into one anyway. It also lines up with a broader pattern this year of Final Fantasy 14's Fan Fest stops generating headlines almost as much for candid, off-the-cuff Yoshida moments as for the actual news drops.
Chort merch might not be officially confirmed yet, but between the memes, the fan art, and now Yoshi-P's own bemused blessing, it feels less like a matter of "if" and more "when."
